Pond lining in Wolverhampton

Sandstone that suits a soakaway is the wrong ground for a pond. Around the west of Wolverhampton an unlined pool simply drains away, so we line ponds, lakes and reservoirs with welded membrane over a protective underlay.

Ground that won't hold water

On the free-draining sandstone of Tettenhall, Codsall and the South Staffordshire countryside, a hole in the ground is a soakaway whether you want one or not. A pond dug there needs a liner from day one.

East of the city the problem is different. Ponds and basins on old industrial land may sit over made ground that should not get wet, or over clays that crack. In both cases a welded membrane keeps the water where the design put it. Shallow margins dry out first, and a liner that stops at the waterline invites leaks, so here the sheet runs all the way up to the crest.

What gets lined around the city

Farm irrigation reservoirs are a large part of it. The light soils west and north of Wolverhampton grow crops that need watering through the summer, and a lined reservoir filled in winter carries the farm through the dry months.

Closer in, the work is lakes in parks and grounds, fishing pools, school and community wildlife ponds, and lined SuDS basins on new housing and regeneration sites. Relines are common too, where an old liner has split or a puddled clay bed has dried out.

Canal-side and parkland water

Several canals meet around Wolverhampton, and regeneration along them often includes new water features, wetland pockets and ponds for wildlife. Those sites tend to have awkward shapes, retaining walls and old masonry at the edges. PP and LLDPE are good at following those shapes, and every junction with a wall or a pipe is detailed by hand before the pond is filled.

Our method

For big reservoirs and sunny banks we usually recommend HDPE. For awkward shapes and a lot of detailing, LLDPE or PP. EPDM suits small curved ponds. If a natural bed matters more than anything, we may suggest a GCL instead, which has its own page.

  • Liner recommended for the pond: HDPE, LLDPE, EPDM, PP or GCL
  • Formation trimmed by others; checked by us before lining
  • Protective geotextile underlay
  • Panels joined with wedge and extrusion welders, plus a written-up trial weld
  • Pipes, headwalls and edges detailed and sealed
  • Perimeter locked into an anchor trench

The same discipline at scale

Our 3,500m² basin for new homes in Worcester was lined in 1mm HDPE. A reservoir on a Staffordshire farm or a basin on an M54 employment site is built the same way: underlay first, welded panels, details sealed, and weld records completed before we leave site.

Frequently asked questions

Most likely because it sits on sandstone, which drains freely. An unlined pond there will lose water through its bed. A welded liner over underlay stops it.

Yes. Farm reservoirs here are mostly HDPE or LLDPE. We seal the draw-off pipe and the spillway through the membrane and bury its edge in a trench at the crest.

Usually. We inspect the old liner, find why it failed, and install a new system over a fresh protection layer.

No. The pond, banks and anchor trench are formed by your groundworker or earthworks contractor. We line it.
