A city on the watershed
Wolverhampton sits on the high ground between two of England's great river systems. Water falling on the west side of the city runs off through the Smestow Brook towards the Stour and the Severn. Water falling on the north and east heads for the Penk and the Tame, and on to the Trent.
That matters for drainage because the receiving watercourses here are close to their sources: small brooks with little capacity to take a sudden surge. Discharge limits on new development reflect that, so most sites need storage behind a flow control, and the tank has to hold water without leaking into the ground around it.
