Slurry lagoon lining near Sheffield

Sheffield is a city, but its boundary runs out into hill farming country on the edge of the Peak District. For the livestock farms there, and for stores elsewhere in South Yorkshire, we weld up lagoon liners and leave a QA pack an inspector can work from.

Livestock farms beyond the suburbs

West of Stannington and Oughtibridge the houses thin out into fields, walls and moorland. Dairy, beef and sheep farms around Bradfield, the Ewden valley and on towards Penistone are where lagoon work around Sheffield comes from. The city centre and the industrial east have none, and we won't pretend otherwise.

Further out, arable land to the east of the county supports some anaerobic digestion, and digestate needs the same sealed storage as slurry.

Relining an earth-banked store

A lot of older stores on these farms are banked in local clay and have been in use for decades. Relining one is often more practical than building new. After an inspection, your earthmoving contractor reshapes the banks and cuts the edge trenches; we walk both with the drawings in hand before any rolls are delivered.

On hill ground the stones come up with every bucket, so a 300gsm non-woven protection fleece goes down first across the base and banks.

Banks that have slumped or been patched over the years usually need rebuilding to a firm, even slope first. A liner draped over a soft bank gets stressed wherever it spans a hollow.

From one liner to two

What goes in depends on the contents and on what your consultant or the permit asks for. A simple store might take the fleece and one welded liner. A higher-risk store gets a double-lined HDPE or LLDPE system:

  • Fleece, then the lower liner, its panels welded together
  • A drainage medium that leads any seepage to an inspection point
  • The upper liner welded over the top
  • Fill point, draw-off and level gauge sealed through the liner
  • A floating cover where it is specified, keeping rain out and smell in

Getting a lining crew onto a hill farm

Lanes up here are narrow and steep, and a lorry with liner rolls needs a plan. We agree the delivery route and a hardstanding to unload onto before the day. Weather on the high ground changes fast, so we weld only on a clean, dry seam, and a sample weld peeled at the start of each shift shows the machine settings are right.

At the end you get a record of every roll that went in, each day's weld results and drawings of the finished store, which is what an inspection or an insurer will ask to see.

A properly welded HDPE or LLDPE store should give decades of service, and in our experience the pumps and fittings around it wear out long before the liner does.

Frequently asked questions

The work around Sheffield is on farms at the western edge of the city and further out in South Yorkshire, not in the urban area. All of the county is within reach of our Tamworth base.

Yes. The SSAFO rules cover stores that are new or have been substantially changed. Which of them bite on your farm is your adviser's call, and we line and document the store to meet it.

Yes, where the design calls for one. On a wet upland farm, keeping rainwater out of the store also protects the capacity you need for slurry.
