Slurry lagoon lining in Staffordshire

Staffordshire is dairy country, from the Moorlands around Leek to the pasture of the Dove valley and the land around Uttoxeter and Stone. We line slurry and digestate lagoons across the county and next door, among them a 2,000m² store just over the border at Bodymoor Heath.

A lagoon down the road from our base

Bodymoor Heath is a few miles from our Tamworth yard. There we lined a 2,000m² farm lagoon in welded LLDPE, sandwiched between two layers of 300g/m² fleece: one underneath on the formation and one on top as a guard against stock and stone. Rain set in partway through, so we reordered the panels to keep to the farmer's date, then went over the whole lining before signing it off.

Herds, hills and clay pasture

Dairy herds are spread across the north and east of the county. In the Moorlands, stores are often on sloping, stony ground with streams below them, which makes the formation check and protection fleece especially important. On the heavier pasture around Uttoxeter, Stone and Eccleshall, older clay-banked lagoons are common, and many are now due for lining.

Anaerobic digestion plants add digestate storage to the mix, usually to a more demanding specification than a farm store.

Single, double and covered

Your consultant sets the build-up from what is stored and what the permit asks for. We install it as specified:

  • Single liner: one welded sheet laid on fleece
  • Double liner: a secondary sheet, drainage layer and primary sheet
  • Leak detection routed to an inspection point between the two
  • Floating cover over the top where it is specified
  • Fill, draw-off and level indication detailed into the liner

Handover that stands up to inspection

Banks, floor and crest trenches are cut by your earthworks firm; we survey them against the drawing before the rolls are ordered to site. One trial weld goes in the log on each lagoon, and the finished file lists the sheet, the weld checks and the final shape, so the farm can answer an inspector or insurer straight away.

Keeping rain off the store

The north of the county is wetter than the south, and rain falling on an open lagoon adds to the volume that has to be stored and later spread. Where the design includes a floating cover, it keeps that rainfall out of the slurry. We weld and fit the cover as part of the same lining job, so it is recorded in the same QA file.

Frequently asked questions

Usually, once we've seen it. Slumped or steep banks get reshaped by your earthworks firm, then a welded sheet goes in, trenched along the crest. That generally costs less than digging a second store.

Both are used in contact with slurry for decades. The specification decides; LLDPE conforms well to uneven formations, as on the Bodymoor Heath lagoon, while HDPE is common on larger and double-lined stores.

Yes, where the design includes one. It is welded and fitted as part of the lining job.

Yes. Sloping sites need well-formed crest trenches and careful handling of the sheet on the banks, with the panels laid to suit the fall. Lorry access down narrow lanes is often the first thing to check, so we ask about it at the start.
