Galvanised steel water tanks in Cambridgeshire

Fenland growers, packhouses and glasshouses get through a lot of water, and a bolted steel tank lined on the inside stores it above ground, with no deep hole needed in wet fen soil. We assemble, line and commission these tanks across Cambridgeshire.

Above ground where digging is hard

Excavating on the Fens often means pumping out groundwater as fast as the hole fills. A steel tank sidesteps the problem by standing on a slab with its whole depth above ground, where it is easy to inspect, drain and keep clear of whatever is in the soil around it.

Common uses here include irrigation stores for vegetable and salad crops, wash water for root crops at packhouses, rainwater collected from glasshouse roofs, and process or recycled water on industrial estates around Peterborough, Huntingdon and Cambridge.

A base designed for soft ground

Peat and silt are compressible, and a tank full of water puts a large load on a small area. Whether it ends up a reinforced slab or a piled or engineered pad, the foundation is someone else's design, sized for the fen ground under it and the weight of a full tank. On firmer chalk and clay sites in the south of the county the base is simpler, but it still needs to be level and true.

Before panels are delivered we level-check the finished foundation and mark the tank's footprint on it.

Ring by ring to a full tank

We bolt the galvanised panels together a ring at a time to the designed capacity. The steel gives the tank its shape and strength; a separate fitted liner inside keeps it watertight, so each part does one job. Pipe connections, an overflow and a level indicator are taken through the liner and sealed.

Commissioning is a staged fill: water goes in a step at a time and each step is checked under load before the next. Once full and holding, the tank is handed over for use, along with a note of the connections we made and the level it was tested to.

Glasshouse and packhouse sites

Glasshouse growers around the fen towns often collect rain from very large roof areas, and a steel tank sited beside the glasshouse can take that harvest and feed the irrigation system. At packhouses the tank usually sits near the washing lines, with its outlet sized for the flow the plant draws.

Tell us the peak demand and how often the tank will be topped up, and we will advise on capacity and siting so the store matches the way the site actually uses water.

Frequently asked questions

It depends on volume and space. A steel tank suits smaller to medium volumes, tight sites and ground where digging is difficult; a lined reservoir suits very large stores. We install both.

They stay dry. The water sits inside a continuous liner, and the bolted galvanised shell simply holds that liner in shape.

Either. We can supply and erect the full kit, or build a tank you have bought direct, checking the delivered parts against the drawing before we start.

Assembly to commissioning usually takes days once the base is complete and cured. We confirm the programme when the size is fixed.
